Numerical Simulation of Flow and Combustion Process in Claus Reaction Furnace[1]

Three-dimensional model of Claus reaction furnace with complicated structures, including the burner, was established using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) method, and the flow and combustion process in the Claus reaction furnace was truly reproduced combined with the calculation model of acid gas combustion reaction. The simulation results were in good agreement with the data of Process Design Package, indicating the reliability of the calculation results. The combustion reaction mainly took place at the front end of the reactor furnace at the exit of the burner. The more intense the mixing of acid gas and combustion air was, the smaller the high temperature zone of combustion reaction was. The CFD results showed the velocity distribution and temperature distribution of flue gas in furnace and the concentration distribution of reactants and reaction products, which can be used directly as the theoretical basis for furnace design.

Design to Prevent Back Flow and Pressure Breakthrough at High Pressure Pump Outlet in Hydroprocessing Unit

In hydroprocessing unit, high pressure pump outlet is connected to high pressure recycle hydrogen system, so facilities must be installed to prevent back flow and pressure breakthrough in case of emergency shutdown, thus avoiding the over-pressure leakage of low-pressure system and the consequent fire and explosion accidents. This paper introduces three types of valves commonly used in China to prevent back flow and pressure breakthrough including check valve, control valve and emergency cut-off valve, analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of each design, and puts forward some suggestions for preventing back flow and pressure breakthrough at high pressure pump outlet. According to the actual operation experience, some optimal suggestions are given for the type selection of emergency cut-off valve and the interlocking transmission sequence in interlocking design.

Modification Design of Pressurized Tower E334 by Interchanging Condenser Ends

During the operation of the condenser in pressurized tower E334, the upper end pipe plate and heat exchanger pipe nozzle are always corroded first to cause leakage and result in great startup and shutdown losses. Although the condenser can still be used after rush-repair and welding, it will suffer from repeated corrosion and leakage from time to time, and the production has to be interrupted each time an accident is to be handled. The analysis on equipment status showed that the lower end pipe plate and heat exchanger tube were good, so the upper and lower ends were interchanged. Good effect was obtained, the service life of the equipment was extended, and the daily maintenance and update costs were reduced. Of course, to fundamentally solve the corrosion problem of condenser, materials that are more resistant to corrosion in formic acid environment shall be selected, so as to achieve safe, stable, long-term, full-load and optimal operation of the unit. If this modification design is used in a 20 kt/a polyformaldehyde plant, greater economic benefits will be achieved

Axial Force Problems and Treatment Measures for Vertical Multistage Pumps

In this paper, the axial force problems of 2 vertical multistage pumps used in a chemical plant in China are analyzed and calculated, and modification measures are put forward including replacing the material of guide bearing and changing the size of the seal ring of impeller. The axial force is greatly reduced, and the vibration, shaft seizing and mechanical seal leakage problems caused by the axial force are solved. Temperature and vibration monitoring instruments are also added. In addition, the principle and characteristics of axial force balancing measures commonly used for centrifugal pumps are introduced, and the treatment measures for axial force are summarized, providing reference for centrifugal pump designer, project engineers and operators to deal with the axial force of centrifugal pump.

Bimodal polypropylene products have the characteristics of wide molecular weight distribution and good processability. In order to meet the market demand for new products, hydrogen recovery unit was developed during the design of a polypropylene plant. PRO II software was used to optimize the process of the hydrogen recovery unit. Process parameters were adjusted step by step by analyzing and comparing the equipment specification and energy consumption of different schemes. Finally an optimal process with low investment, low energy consumption and short process flow was developed, which enables the plant to produce bimodal products with ultra-wide molecular weight distribution

In the general layout design of petrochemical plant, environmental conditions are comprehensively utilized to reasonably select the construction site and determine the locations of various structures, transportation lines, pipelines and greenings based on the requirements of production, use, safety and environmental protection. The reasonability of general layout directly affects the quality of general layout design, the construction investment and the production and operation cost. The principles of saving land must be abided by, and rational layout and optimum design shall be carried out so as to achieve the effective utilization of land resources. General layout engineers should fully realize the importance of land conservation and scientifically and rationally use every inch of land. This paper introduces the effective measures for saving land in the general layout design of petrochemical plants from seven aspects of reasonable selection of plant site, layout of process equipment area, road design, layout of tank area, comprehensive layout of pipelines, reserved land and correct understanding of specifications

This article introduces the catalyst metering method of the first 1.0 Mt/a counter-current moving bed CCR unit after removing the lock hopper. A set of data between the differential pressure of regeneration riser and the catalyst lift is calibrated by catalyst metering, and the least square method is used in the curve fitting of data. The linear relationship of the curve is good, and it is successfully applied in the control of catalyst circulation rate, the service life tracking of catalysts, the simulation of carbon content of spent catalysts and the adjustment of burning operation, providing guidance for the operation. Also the influencing factors and the matters needing attention in the use of this technology are analyzed, thus improving the continuous metering and control of catalysts in counter-current moving bed CCR process

Taking the high pressure air cooler in a 4.4 Mt/a residual oil hydrogenation unit and its inlet and outlet piping arrangement as the research background, this paper uses CAESARII software to simulate and analyze the high pressure air cooler and its inlet and outlet piping. Under normal operating conditions, the precise simulation method of air cooler equipment is found by changing the simulation mode of equipment, the calculation temperature of equipment, the form of support points and the layout of piping. It is concluded that setting low friction pair at the air cooler support point and changing the pipe routing can reduce the force acting on air cooler nozzle, and taking the average temperature of the inlet and outlet piping as the calculation temperature of air cooler is more reasonable. Finally, on the premise of meeting the force of air cooler nozzle, the piping is reasonably arranged, the piping material is reduced, and the engineering investment is saved

Cracking Analysis of High Pressure Flange in a Hydrocracking Unit

A large number of cracks were found in the gasket slot of high pressure flange in a hydrocracking unit. The maximum depth of the cracks was 130 mm and the length was close to the whole flange circumference. Some of them had extended into the parent metal from the weld overlay. In order to find the reasons for the formation and expansion of these cracks, the high pressure flange was tested by macro inspection, non-destructive testing, metallographic examination, hardness and mechanical testing, chemical composition analysis, fracture scanning electron microscopy and corrosion products test of fracture. It was found that the reasons for the high-pressure flange cracking include the incomplete solution treatment which gives rise to the sigma phase in the material, the corrosive elements such as Cl and S in the medium, the production of polythionic acid, the long-term contact with hydrogen and the stress concentration environment caused by multifaceted stress
