Abstract: The principle and main characteristics of two coke quench processes, i.e. the overflow process and the soaking process, were introduced and compared. The improved overflow coke quench process is superior to the common overflow process due to its simpler process flow, lower investment and operating cost and less floor area. However, the pervasion of steam and the emission of sour gas still need to be solved. For the improved soaking process, such problems were avoided by separately treating the coke cooling water, and the cleaning frequency of coke cooling water tank was also reduced

Key words: cold coke, overflow, soaking
